System requirements

Minimum figures get the Editor open. Recommended figures reflect comfortable Nanite and Lumen development on PC. Always confirm against Epic’s current hardware notes for your target platform.

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit (or newer Windows 11 64-bit) Windows 11 64-bit
CPU Quad-core Intel or AMD, 2.5 GHz or faster Eight-core or better workstation / gaming CPU
Memory (RAM) 8 GB 32 GB
GPU DirectX 12 compatible GPU with current drivers Dedicated DX12 GPU with ample VRAM for Nanite / Lumen scenes
Storage type SSD strongly preferred for Editor and cooked data NVMe SSD for engine, cache, and project content
Epic Games Launcher storage Estimate ~3 GB free space for the launcher itself (separate from engine components)
Engine disk use (estimate) No fixed installer size. Estimates commonly place a minimal engine install around 30 to 40 GB. Fuller Editor + starter content setups often exceed 100 GB. Keep extra free space for temporary downloads during install.

macOS and Linux minimums differ by GPU API and supported OS versions. Treat the table above as the Windows development baseline used most often in public docs.

Install flow

Numbered setup sequence

Follow these steps in order. The floating Download control on this site points back here so you can re-check version and storage before you commit disk space.

  1. Create or sign in to an Epic account

Engine downloads are tied to account authentication. Accept Epic’s terms before you continue.

  2. Install the Epic Games Launcher

Budget roughly ~3 GB for the launcher. Keep it on an SSD if possible.

  3. Open Unreal Engine library and select 5.8

Choose Unreal Engine 5.8 (or the latest 5.8.x patch) and the components you need. Prefer the patch your studio standardizes on.

  4. Confirm free disk space before download

Leave headroom beyond the final install. Temporary packages during download can spike usage.

  5. Launch the Editor and create a test project

Verify GPU drivers, then open a blank or template project. Optional: install Lyra or other samples to stress-check plugins.

Highlights only. Prefer Epic’s full release notes for plugin-breaking changes before you migrate a live project.

Post-release patches

5.8.1 and 5.8.2

Follow-up patch notes address stability, platform regressions, and smaller Editor fixes after the June 17 major. Prefer installing the latest 5.8.x patch your pipeline certifies rather than staying on the day-one build.

Migration tip

Before upgrading projects

Back up the project, regenerate Visual Studio files after engine switch, and re-validate lighting and Nanite settings. Feature context lives on the features page.

Integrity

Checksums and antivirus false positives

Prefer account-authenticated downloads through the Epic Games Launcher. Avoid third-party “offline installer” mirrors that claim a single exact engine size.

Verify the source

Sign in, select Unreal Engine 5.8 from the official library list, and let the launcher manage component packages. Treat unexpected redirects or cracked redistributables as unsafe.

Antivirus and firewall noise

Large toolchains, ShaderCompileWorkers, and packaging tools sometimes trigger heuristic alerts. Quarantining Engine binaries breaks cook and cook-on-the-fly. Add controlled exclusions only after you confirm the files came from the launcher, then re-scan if your security policy requires it.

Disk and repair

If an install fails mid-download, use the launcher’s verify or repair actions before manually deleting folders. Incomplete caches are a common cause of “missing module” errors on first launch.

License brief

Epic license, not OSI open-source

Unreal Engine is free to download for eligible individuals, studios, and educators under Epic Games license terms. Commercial products may owe a royalty after published revenue thresholds. Eligible users can access source under Epic’s license. That is source-available access, not a claim of OSI open-source status.
